Adoration of the MAGA (2023)

Adoration of the MAGA

“We have seen His star over Florida, and we have come to worship Him.”

Adoration of the MAGA satirizes cynical Republicans who continue to court Trump’s favor in a manipulation of sincerely religious Americans — or, for that matter, in concert with the power-hungry who are only nominally religious. Based on a Botticelli Adoration that features the Medici family, rulers of Florence, as the Magi, this piece finds Republicans falling over themselves to demonstrate devotion to the Orange Jesus. In this case, however, in order to accurately represent Trump’s grandiose self-image, we see an Orange Holy Family: Orange Jesus, Orange Mary and Orange Joseph. It’s obvious that Trump would never share the spotlight, nor agree to be seen in a stable. The pool house at Mar-a-Lago, seen here, is more in line with the luxury Trump brand. Mike Pence just can’t seem to back away from the action, though Texas Governor Greg Abbott has upstaged him by offering the first gift (of migrant arrests at the border) to the Trump baby. At center, holding a crystal ball, is perennial suck-up Ted Cruz, accompanied by South Dakota Governor, NRA favorite and all-around fun gal, Kristi Noem. Ron DeSantis (in ermine robe) and Niki Haley face off, sadly unable to break away from the charade, in spite of their claims to fitness for the highest office in the land. Meanwhile, Josh Hawley teams up with the Q-Anon Shaman, because, why not? The voters of Missouri have very flexible standards, and someone has to top the home-invasion campaign commercial of Missouri senatorial hopeful and disgraced governor, Eric Greitens.

Liz Cheney might have “approved” this message.
